News & Information – Battery Jump Starting 101
Especially during winter, it's good practice to be well prepared for any weather-related challenges. This means wearing proper clothing no matter how short a drive.
As well, onboard equipment should incorporate wiper-fluid reserves, an empty red canister designed specifically to carry fuel and, of course, jumper cables.
In a few easy steps listed below, you'll be ready to properly effect a jump start of your vehicle battery if need be.
Step One
Upon getting the attention of a driver with a good donor battery, makes sure their vehicle is close enough to the dead battery in your vehicle for jumper cables to be connected. However, the vehicles should not be touching.
Step Two -- "Red, Dead, First"
With the donor vehicle turned off, attach the red clasp or positive cable to the red/positive terminal of the dead battery. Then, take the other red clasp and attach it to the red/positive terminal of the donor battery.
Next, the dark negative clasp will be attached to the corresponding terminal of the donor battery with the other end attached to a metal grounding point surrounding the dead battery.
Step Three
With connections secured, the vehicle with the donor battery should be started and allowed to run for 15- to 20-minutes. Then, start the vehicle with the dead battery.
Lastly, remove the cables in the opposite order.
