Earlier this week, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration tweeted out the album cover of Abbey Road. The Beatles, they suggest, are modeling good behavior.
None are texting, taking a call, or wearing headphones, and they are using the designated crosswalk.
Safety organizations like the NHTSA have been fighting a nasty trend lately, using the hashtag #EveryoneIsAPedestrian. Fatalities to foot-travelers are on the rise, even as the number of deaths per year is falling in every other group of road users.
To stay safer, the NHTSA is doling out similar advice to both car drivers and to walkers.
- Obey traffic laws and signals
- Don't use electronic devices
- Don't drive or walk under the influence
The safety organization goes on to caution drivers that pedestrians wearing headphones or hats may be unable to hear their vehicle approaching, and to always stop for pedestrians at crosswalks.
