So, this summer you made plans to go on your first ATV four-wheeling trip. You're excited, but you want your friends to think you know what you're doing.
Show up to your first expedition with professional loading and tie-down skills with these simple steps.
- Don't cheap out on ramps. Invest in ATV ramps from a recognized brand, and make sure the weight rating is high enough.
- Position the ATV behind your truck until you have a nice straight-shot lined up into the bed. Then place the ramps so they are centered with the ATV's wheels. Secure them to the safety chain hookup or other hitch point using strong straps.
- Don your helmet, get on the ATV, and shift into 4-low. Stay on the gas as you ascend the ramps; the 4-low gear will keep you at a slow, even speed.
- Park, and remove the key so it doesn't fall out on the highway.
- Tie down, running the strap across the cargo racks. Ratcheting straps will allow you to easily compress the suspension as you tighten. If not, find a friend, and have them sit or pull down on the ATV to compress the suspension while you tie.
