You may have heard the myth that a car door cannot be opened once it starts to sink. This is true. Until all the air in the cabin has been filled up by water, even a body-builder would have trouble forcing the door open.
If you've passed the point of no return, your best option might be to wait patiently, conserving oxygen until the cabin is flooded. Then you can easily open the door (if it's not damaged), and swim to safety.
There are two better choices than that though. One is to keep a window-breaking hammer in your car. These pointed special devices easily crack the glass, allowing you to escape through the window. More efficient still is escaping out the door or window before the car sinks. You may only have a few seconds, so act quickly.
